Waylon Jennings: Dreaming My Dreams
Release: 1975 RCA/Victor
Waylon Jennings led the outlaw country music movement with the release of Dreaming My Dream. It took 22 albums for him to gain the artistic freedom he needed to fully come into his own. Dreaming My Dreams topped the country albums chart and peaked at number forty-nine on the Billboard Albums Chart.
The record led to Jennings winning the Year Country Music Association‘s award for Male Vocalist of the Year. The album also received a 5 star rating from AllMusic. The singles “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” and “Dreaming My Dreams with You” made the top ten on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs.
For an era when vinyl records were taking a backseat to cassettes and vinyl quality was hit or mis, the 1975 pressing was surprisingly well done by RCA. Jenning’s deeply expressive voice stands front and center, as does his guitar picking. The separation of musical instruments is well developed and well developed. Most notable are the tambourines, cymbals, harmonica, and fluttering vocals on “I Recall a Gypsy Woman”.
