Shelby Lynne: Just a Little Lovin'
Original Release: 2008 Lost Highway Records
Reissue: 2014 Analogue Productions (45 RPM 200-gram vinyl)
Originally released in 2008 on Lost Highway records, this 2014 reissue by Analogue Productions is without question the version with the best sound quality. Incredible may be an understatement. This reissue was cut to LP by Doug Sax from analog master sources and pressed on 200-gram vinyl plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings
"Just a Little Lovin'" is Shelby Lynne's best work. Everything from her voice, to the orchestration, to the instrumentation, to the recording, to the mastering was done superbly well. On "Just a Little Lovin'" Lynne pays respect to Dusty Springfield (plus one original and Tony Joe White's "Willie and Laura Mae Jones."). Lynne doesn't merely rerecord Dusty's songs, she does so with reverence and the utmost respect.
However, the kicker with Analogue Productions reissue is the sound. Many have ranked it up there with some of the best 'audiophile' recordings ever made. Some have claimed to "hear the music in an entirely new way", bringing new life to an already wonderful recording.
The music seems to explode from the speakers. The backgrounds are as quiet as any of the most celebrated audiophile pressings. Lynne's voice simply comes alive and jumps out of silence and into the space around you. The record is rich sounding, detailed, and lively. Kudos to veteran producer Phil Ramone (producer of many early Billy Joel albums), who happened to also be the engineer for Springfield's original recording of "The Look Of Love."
