Morgan Wallen: Dangerous

Release: 2021 Big Loud/Republic Records

Morgan Wallen: Dangerous

Morgan Wallen followed up his 3x platinum 2018 release, If I Know Me with the 30 song double record, Dangerous. The album received positive reviews from critics and was an immediate commercial success, launching Wallen into the level of stardom that apparently out paces his ability to handle such fame. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and set the all-time record for longest residency in the number one spot on Billboard's Country Albums chart (97 weeks).

The songs on Dangerous: The Double Album weave between pop country, country rock and country ballads. It is a nice blend of today's modern country style, and occasionally hints at the potential Wallen possesses to sing in a traditional country style.

Like Luke Combs and Zach Bryan have done, Morgan Wallen put too many songs on one album. One cannot hope to have flow with 30 songs. Why is this important? Listen to Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", Nirvana's "Nevermind", or Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". More songs would not have helped these masterpieces. They are perfect where as they stand. They have also proven themselves to be such over years and years of time testing. Imagine how much more people would have talked about how great Morgan Wallen's Dangerous is had he pulled 15 of the best songs together for the album. Time will tell.

Surprisingly, the record is pressed very well for a mass market release. The vinyl is reasonably quiet, although it required a hefty cleaning before playing. There is solid musical separation, good dynamic range and the clarity is better than one might expect. Overall, the album was mastered well, almost as if vinyl was the intended medium when recorded.

If you're a modern country music fan, this album is worth a listen. If your'e a Wallen fan, you'll love it. If you're a traditional country fan, you may want to throw a chair at it from time to time. However, be patient. It may grow on you. You'll just have to tolerate the so-so songs sprinkled between the strong ones. 💰
