Fleetwood Mac: The Pious Bird Of Good Omen
Original Release: 1969 Blue Horizon
Reissue: 2007 Speakers Corner (Blue Horizon)
This compilation of songs from the "Original" Fleetwood Mac's first two albums [Fleetwood Mac (aka: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac) and Mister Wonderful] were originally recorded between 1967 and 1968. This reissue by Speakers Corner was pressed on 180-gram vinyl and remastered using pure analogue components from the master tapes through to the cutting head.
Original band members include Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Eddie Boyd, Big Walter Horton, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood. Influenced by the work that Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood contributed on as members of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, "The Pious Bird Of Good Omen" sounds very similar to the work of Mayall's Bluesbreakers. However, unlike the Bluesbreakers, their style landed them at the top end of the pop charts in 1969, ahead of heavyweights such as The Beatles and Stevie Wonder. Many, such as allmusic.com, view the early music of Fleetwood Mac to be the best British blues ever to be played.
As a general rule, Speakers Corner has a history of releasing very high-quality reissues. Typically using original master tapes, their attention to detail and commitment to releasing music in the manner of the artist original intended and as it was meant to be released, has resulted in some wonderful reissues, "The Pious Bird Of Good Omen" being one of them.
Without question this is a very dynamic and beautiful sounding reissue. This reissue is as clear as it can be given the technology for the time it was recorded. Crisp, clean and deep best describe the record's sound quality. This is one of those records that can lead you to become lost in the music and feeling as if you are in the studio with the band.

If you are looking for a quality recording of some, not all, of Fleetwood Mac's early recordings or are simply interested in hearing a great blues record, I would recommend this version of "The Pious Bird Of Good Omen". It is a great introduction to the pre pop-rock era of Fleetwood Mac that made the band a super group. It is also a good example of how the rock and pop we enjoy today was so greatly influenced by the blues genre 💰.
