Def Leppard: Pyromania
Original Release: 1983 Mercury Records
Pyromania was British hard rock band Def Leppard’s third studio album. The album was produced by Mutt Lange who also produced records for other hugely successful artists of the era such as AC/DC and The Cars.
Pyromania was also Def Leppard’s attempt to move away from their heavy metal roots and toward a more mainstream sound. As such, the band realized significant commercial success and notoriety with Pyromania. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over ten million copies in the US, and has been diamond certified.
Like many albums pressed in the eighties, Pyromania was most likely pressed on recycled vinyl using then “new” digital masters. Something Billie Eilish recently attempted and failed at on her latest album. Some parts of history need not be repeated.
As such, the detail, sound stage, and dynamic range are lacking. There is nothing that this vinyl record brings that cannot be achieved with a digital copy.
Unless you are a diehard fan or diehard vinyl collector, save your money on the original release and go of a recently remastered vinyl pressing or download a high resolution copy. It’ll sound better and cost less. 💸
