Billie Holiday: Body and Soul

Billie Holiday was an iconic female jazz vocalist who influenced the genre in ways that continue to be felt today. Her vocal style, unique voice, and social influence was instrumental in the evolution of a genre and artists, such as Frank Sinatra.

Analogue Production’s reissue of Body and Soul is one of the more musically dynamic and detailed releases of such a historic record. Originally released in 1957, Body and Soul was Holiday’s 7th studio record and one that, in retrospect, is “middle of the road” for Holiday. Granted, “middle of the road” for Holiday is exceptional work for most.

In its 1957 review of the album, Saturday Review wrote: "With changes in her voice which bring Miss Holiday's singing closer to recitative has come an occasional timidity about altering a melody where before there was boldness. But she remains one of the best jazz singers, not only for her unique sound and attack, but for her straightforward, honest, musical communication."

TRACK LIST
1. Body And Soul
2. They Can't Take That Away From Me
3. Darn That Dream
4. Let's Call The Whole Thing Off
5. Comes Love
6. Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You
7. Embraceable You
8. Moonlight In Vermont

Even though the Saturday Review had mixed feelings about the release, the ultimate compliment was paid. They were comparing this release to her previous six releases, which is a statement. Holiday was so good at the time there was really no one else to compare her work to. Her "middle of the road" work is great work for most everyone else.

That said, Analogue Production's release is a wonderful pressing of a wonderful record and one we recommend💰
