Al Green: Call Me

Al Green, affectionately known as "The Reverend" released Call Me as his sixth album. Call Me is widely regarded as Green's masterpiece and has been called one of the best soul albums ever made.

Call Me reached top 10 album on Billboard's Pop Album Chart and number 1 on the Soul Album Chart. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Call Me at number 289 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album contained three top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "You Ought to Be with Me," "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and "Call Me (Come Back Home)."

Needless to say, Al Green sang with passion and an emotive style that endeared music lovers from every genre. His deep soulful presentation drew the listener in and kept them engaged.

Vinyl Me, Please is a record club that does not press their own albums, but contracts with manufacturers to release albums on colored vinyl, typically. Fat Possum being the manufacturer in this case. Fat Possum is by no means an audiophile manufacturer. This pressing reflects the fact that they are "Trying" as they like to say.

All things considered, this is not a bad pressing. It presents well and has a reasonable sonic stage. However, it misses out on many opportunities to shine. This pressing reminds me of the expression used in so many situations, "Sometimes good enough is good enough". This record is good enough to enjoy, but not one that will make you want to pinch yourself.

Overall, this is a good release that is deserving of consideration. However, you'll pay a premium for the "Vinyl Me, Please Classics" stamp on the back. And, it is not even colored. Therefore, if you are interested in grabbing a copy we recommend picking up the Fat Possum version without the VMP stamp. It is essentially the same thing. 💵
